Life Reclaimed

Legal precedents, cultural shifts, and societal values do not change by accident. They change when the lay faithful step up as attorneys, judges, policymakers, healthcare executives, and civic leaders to defend truth in the public arena.

In October, the Church in the United States marks Respect Life Month.

Dear TLI Family,

As we step into October, the Church in the United States marks Respect Life Month, a time set aside to reflect deeply on the sacred gift of human life from conception to natural death.

At Tepeyac Leadership, our mission rests on the conviction that lay Catholic leaders are called to transform culture in the civil square. True leadership does not operate in a vacuum; it stands right at the intersection of our faith and the urgent events of our world.

This month, that intersection brings us a reminder of the battle for life and a sign of hope.

A Milestone for Personhood

Just days ago, a legal milestone unfolded in New Mexico that caught the attention of pro-life advocates across the nation. For the first time in U.S. history, an aborted baby’s estate collected a $200,000 settlement in a wrongful-death lawsuit against an abortionist (Wabbington v. Boyd).

The case involved a 26-week-old unborn child whose mother signed a consent form while under severe chemical impairment, a tragic circumstance that highlights how the culture of death often preys upon the most vulnerable and marginalized mothers.

While the surrounding state law still reflects a tragic contradiction, permitting abortion while recognizing the unborn child's personhood under civil law, this historic outcome marks a significant shift. The legal system was forced to acknowledge what our faith and basic human reason have always known: the unborn child is a human person with intrinsic dignity and rights.

Leadership in the Civil Square

Why does this story matter? Because legal precedents, cultural shifts, and societal values do not change by accident. They change when the lay faithful step up as attorneys, judges, policymakers, healthcare executives, and civic leaders to defend truth in the public arena.

When St. Juan Diego met Our Lady at Tepeyac, he was entrusted with a message that transformed a culture of death into a civilization of life and love. Today, Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to call lay men and women to bring that same light into the institutions of modern society. As we confront these real-world challenges, we do so with great Christian hope.

We are looking forward with great anticipation to gathering in Mexico City on October 22–24. Together, at the very feet of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we will recharge our spiritual batteries, connect as a global family, and discern how to lead effectively in today's world.

Let us ask Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Unborn to guide our footsteps as we continue building a culture of life together.

Cristofer Pereyra
