Advocating for Peace: A Call to Action for Catholics

Beyond the workplace, lay Catholics can also advocate for peace in civil society. This includes staying informed about global conflicts, supporting humanitarian efforts, and encouraging elected officials to pursue diplomatic solutions.

In a world increasingly marked by violence, war, and division—from the devastating conflict between Russia and Ukraine to the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel—many lay Catholic professionals feel a growing urgency to respond. But how can individuals, far from the halls of diplomacy or military command, meaningfully advocate for peace? The answer lies in the sanctification of the ordinary and the intentional witness of Gospel values in the workplace and society.

Pope Leo XIV, in his recent address to global leaders, urged all Catholics—not only political authorities—to become “artisans of peace.” He reminded the faithful that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the fruit of justice, truth, and solidarity. He called on laypeople to become active agents of reconciliation, reminding them that “true peace begins in the human heart and radiates outward, transforming families, communities, and nations.”

For Catholic professionals, this call is particularly significant. The office, boardroom, classroom, hospital, or courtroom can all become platforms for the Gospel’s transformative message. Living as a peacemaker begins with how we treat others—especially those who disagree with us. In a polarized world, the simple acts of listening with empathy, refusing to speak ill of others, and advocating for truth and justice without hostility are revolutionary.

Pope Leo XIV emphasized the need for a “culture of encounter,” urging Catholics to reach beyond ideological and political divisions. In practical terms, this means cultivating dialogue in the workplace, promoting ethical business practices, and ensuring that our professional decisions consider the dignity of every person, especially the most vulnerable. When a Catholic professional ensures fair hiring practices, speaks up for a colleague being mistreated, or chooses transparency over corruption, they are contributing to the foundations of peace.

Beyond the workplace, lay Catholics can also advocate for peace in civil society. This includes staying informed about global conflicts, supporting humanitarian efforts, and encouraging elected officials to pursue diplomatic solutions. Engaging in respectful civic discourse, voting with conscience, and encouraging public policies that foster global cooperation are all within reach for the Catholic professional.

Moreover, prayer and personal sacrifice should never be underestimated. Pope Leo XIV has asked the faithful to fast and pray for peace, underlining the spiritual battle that undergirds every worldly conflict. Organizing or participating in community Rosaries, Eucharistic adoration, or interfaith prayer services for peace can powerfully unite the spiritual and public dimensions of lay leadership.

Finally, Catholic professionals must never forget the witness of hope. The temptation to despair in the face of suffering and war is real. But by modeling lives of joy, perseverance, and confident trust in Christ, lay Catholics offer the world something it desperately needs: a reason to believe that peace is possible—because with God, all things are.

In this critical moment in history, the lay Catholic professional is not a bystander. Through intentional witness, ethical leadership, prayer, and civic engagement, they are uniquely positioned to respond to Pope Leo XIV’s call and help build a civilization of love and peace.
