If Not Us, Who? The Cost of Silence in the Public Sphere

Countdown to #RaiseUpAndLead (June 23–27)

In today’s fractured world, silence is no longer neutral. When faithful Catholics withdraw from the public sphere—out of fear, fatigue, or a mistaken sense of humility—we don’t just leave a void. We leave room for louder, often distorted voices to shape the future without us.

The cost of Catholic silence is steep. In education, policies emerge that confuse rather than clarify. In healthcare, human dignity is compromised. In business and media, moral relativism becomes the norm. These aren’t abstract consequences—they impact lives, families, and the very fabric of our civilization.

Now more than ever, we must ask: If not us, who?

The False Divide

Too many Catholic professionals have accepted the idea that faith should be kept “private.” That religion and public life must remain separate. But this is neither the vision of the Church nor the call of the Gospel.

The Second Vatican Council affirmed that the laity—especially professionals—are called to be the Church in the world. Gaudium et Spes teaches that “the split between the faith which many profess and their daily lives deserves to be counted among the more serious errors of our age.” In other words, faith must not only be professed in the pews—it must be lived in the public square.

When we compartmentalize our faith, we rob the world of truth, light, and hope. Worse, we allow others to define the moral compass of our culture without resistance.

Silence Is Not an Option

The silence of good people enables the success of harmful agendas. When Catholic professionals say nothing in the boardroom, at the ballot box, or in civic debate, the message is clear: the Church has nothing to say. But this is a lie.

The Church has wisdom to offer—centuries of insight on human dignity, justice, peace, family, and the common good. And Catholic professionals have the credibility, access, and responsibility to bring that wisdom into the world.

We are not called to shout, condemn, or dominate. We are called to witness—to stand, speak, and serve with love and courage. A faithful Catholic voice in a position of influence can reframe a conversation, protect the vulnerable, or inspire hope in the disillusioned. But only if that voice is willing to speak.

Leadership Through Presence

At Tepeyac Leadership, we believe every Catholic professional has a role to play in healing our culture—not by hiding their faith, but by integrating it into every aspect of their leadership. Whether you’re a CEO, attorney, nurse, engineer, or educator, your influence matters. Your silence matters, too.

The question is no longer whether Catholics should engage. The real question is: What happens if we don’t?

The world is not waiting for perfect saints. It is waiting for faithful witnesses—men and women of integrity who will lead with conviction, compassion, and clarity.

If we remain silent, we forfeit that role. But if we rise up—now—we can be the leaders the world so desperately needs.
