Is the Tide Turning, Slowly?

As we move forward, we can take heart in knowing our Christian values are not only enduring but can reassert themselves in the public sphere.

As Catholic leaders in civil society, we are committed to upholding values that are dear to us. We are also acutely aware of the opposing cultural currents that have shaped society over the past decade. Recently, however, it seems the tide may be shifting toward a direction more in line with our Christian worldview.

This small shift was evident during the Super Bowl. Traditionally a platform for entertainment and consumerism, the Super Bowl has also been a stage for cultural trends—particularly, those promoting the woke ideologies we’ve seen increase on recent years. However, this year was different. For the first time in a while, we witnessed a striking absence of the ideologies that have dominated the airwaves in recent times.

Instead, many of the advertisements that aired Sunday during the Super Bowl conveyed messages of unity, family, and personal responsibility. Brands seemed to be speaking to a broader audience, emphasizing timeless values rather than adopting polarizing agendas. Several commercials even showcased family dynamics in a way that reflected the values at the heart of Catholic teaching. Did you notice it too?

Don't get me wrong. We have a long way to go!

But it seems to me, from heartwarming depictions of family life to themes of connection and love, there was, even if superficial, a clear shift towards portraying the family as central to society. This is a departure from previous years, where advertisements often leaned into divisive themes or messages that appeared to challenge or redefine traditional structures.

As members of society, it’s important for us Catholics to recognize and respond to these subtle but significant cultural shifts. A small and slow return to traditional family values in media and the culture signals an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to these principles, promoting them through our own leadership in our professional and personal lives.

Let us continue to support and advocate for the dignity of life and the family, and the importance of nurturing future generations in the ways of faith and virtue. As we move forward, we can take heart in knowing our Christian values are not only enduring but can reassert themselves in the public sphere.

And this is just what the celebration at the upcoming Tepeyac Leadership Gala in Phoenix, Arizona will be all about. If you've considered attending, I invite you to get your tickets today.
