As President Donald Trump prepares for a high-level summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, more than 100 bipartisan members of the U.S. Congress have called on him to place the case of imprisoned Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy advocate Jimmy Lai at the center of his discussions with Beijing.
In a formal letter sent to the White House, lawmakers urged Trump to press for Lai’s immediate humanitarian release, citing concerns about his age, deteriorating health, and the severity of his 20-year prison sentence under Hong Kong’s national security framework. The letter was backed by a broad coalition across party lines, including senators and representatives from both chambers of Congress, reflecting unusual unity on the issue of human rights in China.
Jimmy Lai as a Symbol of Press Freedom
Jimmy Lai, a British citizen and founder of the now-shuttered pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, has become one of the most prominent symbols of Hong Kong’s shrinking press freedom. Arrested in 2020 following Beijing’s imposition of the national security law, he was later convicted of charges including alleged collusion with foreign forces and sedition, accusations his supporters and international observers widely describe as politically motivated.
Lawmakers emphasized that Trump had previously pledged during his presidential campaign to work toward Lai’s release. They are now urging him to follow through during direct engagement with Xi Jinping, arguing that personal diplomacy at the summit could prove decisive.
Diplomatic Tensions and Global Priorities
The congressional appeal comes at a moment of heightened geopolitical tension between Washington and Beijing, with the summit agenda expected to include trade disputes, technology restrictions, Taiwan, and regional security concerns. Human rights advocates, however, are pressing for Lai’s case to remain visible amid broader strategic negotiations.
Supporters of the initiative argue that Lai’s imprisonment represents a broader pattern of shrinking civil liberties in Hong Kong and increasing pressure on dissenting voices. They also highlight his advanced age and reported health concerns, framing his continued detention as a humanitarian urgency rather than solely a political issue.
International Concerns Over Rule of Law
While the Chinese government maintains that Lai’s prosecution is a domestic legal matter, critics in the United States and other democratic nations continue to call for his release and for accountability regarding the treatment of political dissidents.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that the national security framework imposed on Hong Kong has significantly reduced judicial independence and restricted freedoms of expression and the press, raising concerns among Western governments and advocacy groups.
As Trump prepares for his visit, the congressional letter adds to mounting diplomatic pressure, positioning Jimmy Lai’s fate as a symbolic test of how far human rights concerns will factor into the evolving United States and China relationship.
