Living Vatican II: The Pope’s Vision for Lay Apostolate

At the heart of his message was a missionary call. Pope Leo praised the evangelical zeal of the movements, which have often reached “the most distant places, in the most challenging environments.”

In a powerful and pastoral address delivered on June 6, 2025, Pope Leo XIV met with the international leaders of lay associations, ecclesial movements, and new communities at the Vatican’s Clementine Hall. Speaking to those who represent thousands of Catholics living out their faith in diverse ways, the Holy Father reaffirmed the vital role of the laity in the life and mission of the Church—especially in the light of the Second Vatican Council.

“You represent the thousands of people who live out their faith and exercise their apostolate within associations, movements and communities,” the Pope began. Acknowledging both the challenges and the rewards of lay leadership, he expressed deep gratitude: “The Church is grateful to you for all the good that you do.”

A central theme of the address was the importance of charisms—the unique gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit—which animate movements and inspire new ways of living the Gospel. Pope Leo emphasized that these charisms are not optional or secondary but “co-essential to the divine constitution of the Church,” echoing the teaching of Saint John Paul II. Without charisms, he warned, the grace offered by Christ “may not find good soil to receive it.”

For Catholic professionals working within these movements, this message serves as both affirmation and challenge. The Pope called on all lay leaders to recognize their vocation as a response to grace—one that contributes to building up the Body of Christ in unity and mission.

The Holy Father drew a clear connection to the Second Vatican Council, which placed strong emphasis on the role of the laity in evangelization and public witness. Quoting the Council’s Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, he reminded the audience that apostolic associations “support their members, train them for the apostolate, and carefully assign and direct their apostolic activities.” The result, he said, is a “much richer harvest” than what could be achieved through isolated individual efforts.

Unity, particularly unity with the Pope and the Church’s pastors, was another priority Pope Leo highlighted. He urged lay leaders to be “a leaven of unity,” grounded in communion with the Church. Citing Saint Paulinus of Nola, he noted, “We are one, in both the spirit and the body of the Lord. If we separate ourselves from that One, we become nothing.”

At the heart of his message was a missionary call. Pope Leo praised the evangelical zeal of the movements, which have often reached “the most distant places, in the most challenging environments.” He encouraged leaders to keep their passion for evangelization alive, placing their talents “at the service of the Church’s mission.”

Finally, he returned to the foundational purpose of every charism and movement: “Always keep the Lord Jesus at the centre!” Charisms, he stressed, “lead to an encounter with Christ,” and must always serve that end.

For Catholic professionals in lay leadership, the Pope’s words offer both encouragement and clarity: their work is not only welcome but essential. It is a work of grace, born of the Spirit, sustained in communion, and directed toward mission.
