Recently, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education, at the Vatican, addressed Artificial intelligence (AI), showing concern for the ethical use of AI, in a document titled Antique et nova.

There is broad consensus that AI marks a new and significant phase in humanity’s engagement with technology, placing it at the heart of what Pope Francis has described as an “epochal change.”[2] Its impact is felt globally and in a wide range of areas, including interpersonal relationships, education, work, art, healthcare, law, warfare, and international relations. The fact is, AI is transforming the workplace, influencing industries ranging from healthcare and finance to education and business. While AI brings many benefits, such as increased efficiency and automation, it also presents ethical challenges. As Catholic professionals, we are called to approach this technological shift with discernment, ensuring that AI serves the good of humanity while respecting human dignity and moral principles.

The Benefits of AI in the Workplace

AI has the potential to enhance productivity by automating repetitive tasks, analyzing large amounts of data quickly, and improving decision-making. In healthcare, AI can assist doctors in diagnosing diseases. In business, it can streamline operations, reducing errors and improving customer service. Even within ministry and evangelization, AI can aid in translating texts, organizing parish administration, and expanding outreach efforts.

For Catholic professionals, AI presents an opportunity to focus on more meaningful work that requires human creativity, compassion, and ethical reasoning. When used responsibly, AI can be a valuable tool that enhances, rather than diminishes, the human contribution to work.

Concerns About AI & the Dignity of Work

One of the main concerns surrounding AI is its impact on employment. Many jobs that involve routine tasks are at risk of being replaced by automation. However, work is not just about earning a living—it is part of human fulfillment and a way to participate in God’s creation. As AI advances, it is essential that individuals and organizations find ways to ensure that work remains an essential aspect of human life.

Rather than replacing workers, AI should be used to support and complement human labor. This may involve retraining employees for new roles, encouraging entrepreneurship, and fostering an environment where innovation leads to new opportunities. Catholic professionals should seek ways to use AI responsibly, ensuring that it enhances human participation in work rather than diminishing it.

Ethical Considerations in AI Development

AI is increasingly used in decision-making processes, such as hiring, financial transactions, and even medical diagnoses. However, technology must always remain under human guidance. AI systems should be developed with moral responsibility, ensuring that decisions made by machines align with ethical principles.

One key concern is the increasing reliance on AI for decision-making without human oversight. Machines cannot replace human judgment, especially in situations that require moral reasoning. Catholic professionals working in technology and business should ensure that AI remains a tool, not an authority, in matters that affect people's lives.

The Role of Catholic Professionals

As AI continues to evolve, Catholic professionals have a responsibility to engage with these developments thoughtfully. Whether working in technology, business, healthcare, or education, individuals should approach AI with wisdom and discernment. This includes asking important questions: Does this technology respect human dignity? Does it allow for human creativity and purpose? Is it being used in a way that aligns with moral principles?

The Bottom Line

AI is a powerful tool with the potential to shape the future of work for better or worse. As Catholic professionals, we must ensure that technological progress remains guided by moral values, keeping human dignity at the center. By using AI responsibly and ensuring that it serves the greater good, we can contribute to a future where technology enhances human work rather than replacing it.
