Following Mary’s Example in the Professional Life

By entrusting ourselves to Mary's loving care and protection, we invite her to lead us deeper into the heart of God's love.

May is the “Month of Mary” and a time of devotion to honor our Blessed Mother. Mother Mary’s significance serves as a profound model of faith, hope, love, charity, and devotion. For centuries, numerous awe-inspiring miracles have occurred demonstrating Mary as a powerful advocate and mediator. By entrusting our professional prayer intentions to Mary, we invite her to intercede for us and present our petitions with her motherly love and heartfelt supplication to her son. We are also invited to exhibit and embrace her virtuous qualities in our own leadership approaches.

Here are five practical tips for focusing on both professional growth and spiritual enrichment honoring Mother Mary as she intercedes for us:

  1. Start and End Your Day with Jesus & Our Blessed Mother 

Begin each workday by inviting Mother Mary into your professional life through prayer. For example, you could pray a rosary or a traditional Marian devotion such as the Angelus or the Memorare. Trust in God's plan as you prepare for the day. Consider incorporating short prayer breaks or mindfulness exercises into your schedule to pause, center yourself, and recenter your focus on God's presence in your work. Then, close each workday by reflecting on your experiences, offering thanksgiving for the daily blessings, and seeking guidance for the challenges ahead. 

  1. Embody Mary's Humility and Obedience

Embrace servanthood and surrender your will to God. Mary's fiat, her "yes" to God's plan, teaches us the power of obedience and submission to God's divine purpose. Mary's unwavering faith and trust in God's plan serve as a source of inspiration for navigating uncertainty and ambiguity in our professional lives. Having humility and obedience allows us to acknowledge our strengths and weaknesses, value the contributions of others, and be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Empower your team members, prioritize collaboration, and teamwork fosters trust, respect, and authenticity in the workplace.

3. Learn from Mary's Compassion and Love 

By embracing Mary's example of compassion, empathy, and selfless love, we cultivate a deeper understanding of Jesus' love for us. Practice compassion by actively listening to your colleagues, understanding their perspectives, considering the needs and emotions of others, and offering support and encouragement when needed. 

4. Embrace Resilience and Perseverance 

“Our Lady of Sorrows” faced numerous painful trials and challenges, yet, she never wavered in her faith and trust in God. Mary's resilience and perseverance offer valuable lessons for navigating professional adversity with courage and determination. Turning to Mary's example can provide solace and strength. Cultivate resilience by adopting a growth mindset, embracing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth, and persevering in the pursuit of your goals. 

Just as Mary cared for Jesus during his earthly life, she is our spiritual mother who continues to watch over and guide us with maternal tenderness and compassion. By entrusting ourselves to Mary's loving care and protection, we invite her to lead us deeper into the heart of God's love. May we grow closer to her son and find inspiration and guidance in her example. Striving to emulate her virtues in our professional lives allows us to cultivate a company culture rooted in faith, hope, love, charity, compassion, mercy, and grace.
