How Is Your Lent Going So Far?

The beauty of Lent is that it reminds us of God’s boundless mercy. The Cross was not the end of the story—Easter was. Our struggles, setbacks, and failures do not define us; God’s grace does. Every time we turn back to Him, He welcomes us with open arms.

As we journey through Lent, it’s a good time to pause and reflect: How is your Lent going so far? For many Catholic professionals, the season began with strong intentions—prayer commitments, fasting goals, and acts of charity. But as the days pass, our enthusiasm may wane, distractions creep in, and we may find ourselves struggling to stay faithful to our Lenten promises. If you feel like you’ve faltered, don’t be discouraged. Lent isn’t about perfection—it’s about persistence, transformation, and growing closer to God.

Failure Is Part of the Journey

Too often, we treat our Lenten commitments like New Year's resolutions: once broken, they seem beyond repair. But failure is part of the human experience. Even the greatest saints struggled in their spiritual lives, yet what set them apart was their willingness to begin again.

If you've missed a day of prayer, given in to a temptation, or failed to follow through on a sacrifice, don’t let discouragement take root. God isn’t keeping score—He is inviting you to return to Him. St. Francis de Sales reminds us, "Have patience with all things, but first of all with yourself." Lent is not about achieving a perfect record but about deepening our relationship with Christ, step by step.

Renewing Your Commitment

Lent is a season of renewal, and there is still time to refocus. Here are three ways to make the most of the time that remains:

  1. Return to Prayer – If your prayer life has been inconsistent, start again today. Whether it's morning prayer, reading Scripture, or Eucharistic Adoration, the important thing is to spend time with God. Even a few moments of quiet prayer at home or in your workplace can help reorient your heart.
  2. Embrace Sacrifice with Joy – Fasting and self-denial are not about proving our willpower; they are about making room for God. If you have struggled with your Lenten sacrifices, don’t abandon them—adjust them if needed and offer them with love. The smallest sacrifice, done for God, has immense value.
  3. Deepen Your Acts of Charity – Lent calls us to love others more intentionally. If you haven’t been as generous with your time or resources as you hoped, look for small ways to serve. A kind word to a colleague, a donation to a charitable cause, or a simple act of patience can all be offerings to God.

God’s Mercy Is Greater Than Our Weakness

The beauty of Lent is that it reminds us of God’s boundless mercy. The Cross was not the end of the story—Easter was. Our struggles, setbacks, and failures do not define us; God’s grace does. Every time we turn back to Him, He welcomes us with open arms.

So, how is your Lent going? No matter where you are in your journey, today is a new opportunity to recommit, refocus, and continue growing closer to Christ. Don’t give up—press on with faith, knowing that God is walking this Lenten path with you.

The title Gringo Salado carries particular significance. Originally used as a cruel insult, it was a label meant to diminish and wound. Even so, the author chose to retain it, despite suggestions from his editor to adopt something more accessible.
