Whose Image Marks Your Career?

Deliver excellence in your career, satisfy your obligations, and lead effectively. But always remember: the center of who you are belongs directly to God.

Every executive, manager, and team leader understands the daily tension of navigating dual obligations. We operate within market realities, regulatory guidelines, corporate compliance, and strict fiscal targets. We manage operational budgets, pursue revenue goals, and build sustainable enterprises. Yet beneath the day-to-day momentum of board meetings and strategy sessions lies a fundamental question of alignment: who holds ultimate ownership of our lives and work?

In the Gospel reading for this Sunday (Matthew 22:15–21), the Pharisees and Herodians present Jesus with a carefully crafted dilemma, asking whether it is permissible under God's law to pay taxes to the Roman emperor. The trap is clear: agreeing with the imperial tax risks alienating the Jewish people, while rejecting it invites immediate charges of treason against Rome. Jesus bypasses the trap entirely by reorienting the premise, asking his questioners to show him the census coin and state whose image and inscription it carries. When they reply that it bears Caesar’s mark, he responds with timeless wisdom: "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

In professional life, dealing with Caesar’s currency is standard practice. Working professionals contribute to the economy, adhere to legal standards, fulfill tax requirements, and respect civic authority. Catholic social teaching reinforces that engaging in economic structures with fairness and integrity is an integral part of civic responsibility, and as St. Paul highlights in Sunday’s second reading (1 Thessalonians 1:3), authentic work is expressed through "a labor of love and endurance in hope." Fulfilling professional obligations with diligence and ethical rigor honors that call.

However, the core takeaway of Christ's teaching lies in his second command: give to God what belongs to God. The Roman denarius carried the physical likeness and title of Tiberius Caesar, meaning that because the coin bore his mark, it fell under his authority. Scripture establishes that every human person is created Imago Dei, in the image and likeness of God. While currency and contracts carry human labels, your soul, character, and fundamental dignity carry God's mark. Your career metrics, titles, and professional standing are temporal tools; they do not define your primary worth.

Living this alignment in executive leadership requires active daily choices when you return to the workplace on Monday morning. Protecting your ethical principles means that when business pressures tempt you to take shortcuts, you anchor your decisions in personal and professional integrity instead. Valuing human capital requires treating staff, vendors, and clients not merely as economic inputs, but with the dignity inherent to human beings. Finally, maintaining order in your priorities allows you to pursue career excellence while keeping your primary devotion centered on faith and service.

Deliver excellence in your career, satisfy your obligations, and lead effectively. But always remember: the center of who you are belongs directly to God.
